The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, will add three new stations to the Lagos Blue Line Rail by end of February 2027.

Managing Director of LAMATA, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this at a media conference organised by Ministry of Transportation on Thursday in Lagos.

Akinajo said new stations will be located at Alakija, FESTAC and Trade Fair, as part of phased plan to extend Blue Line to Okokomaiko.

She also announced plans to introduce three new eight-car train sets on Lagos Red Line Rail in November 2026, which will increase daily services from nine to 20 initially, with plan to raise to 28 before end of 2027.

According to her, LAMATA has continued to expand train services, with Blue Line daily services increased from 12 to 92.

Akinajo said four major Quality Bus Corridor projects, including terminals and depots, are expected to be completed by February 2027.

She said authority is shifting towards cleaner transportation and will no longer procure diesel-powered buses, noting that future acquisitions will focus on Compressed Natural Gas, CNG and electric-powered vehicles in line with Federal Government’s net-zero emissions target for 2050.

“Additional CNG buses are expected within the next five to six months,” she said.

She said LAMATA is strengthening collaboration with transport unions to establish coordinated and regulated public transportation system across Lagos, adding that partnership will improve services and support more integrated and environmentally sustainable system.

On fares, Akinajo said authority has maintained public transportation fares since January despite significant increases in diesel and gas prices, helping passengers avoid additional costs amid rising operational expenses.

She attributed stability to balanced mix of diesel, gas and electric buses, noting savings from electric buses have helped offset rising costs.
