LASWA Seize 120 Life Jackets; Enforce Safety Across Ferry Terminals And Jetties

Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has 120 damaged life jackets were seized and removed from circulation.

This exercise took place during an intensified safety inspections at major ferry terminals across Lagos State, to enforce strict compliance with waterways safety regulations and raise operational standards.

The inspection campaign covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut, with a primary focus on boat seaworthiness and life jacket safety compliance.

LASWA also took immediate action to eliminate hazardous items and ensure strict adherence to safety standards across all waterways operations.

The Authority also identified inconsistent compliance among operators. While many vessels meet safety requirements, some require repairs to achieve full seaworthiness.

The inspections reaffirm that strict enforcement of safety protocols, especially concerning vessel conditions and the quality of life jackets, is non-negotiable.

The Authority declared that enforcement actions will persist at all terminals to guarantee full compliance with safety regulations, operators are legally obligated to maintain seaworthy vessels and to supply only certified, functioning life jackets for passengers.

LASWA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to establishing a safer, more reliable, and well-regulated waterways transportation system in Lagos State.
